Dr. Joan Sy, D.O.

Dr. Sy's interest in medicine commenced at a young age, and her interest deepened throughout the years as she found satisfaction in volunteering her time in hospitals, nursing homes, soup kitchens, orphanage and blood pressure screening drives. Her scholastic achievements began in grade school when she was Valedictorian and continued throughout college. She received her Bachelors of Science degree at the University of California, Riverside, where she discovered the field of Osteopathic Medicine. Unlike traditional medicine, Osteopathy incorporates a more comprehensive understanding of the human body as well as stressing the interrelatedness of structure and function. Furthermore, Osteopathy integrates the ability to practice manual medicine with pharmacological therapy.

Dr. Sy received her doctorate degree from the Western University of Health Sciences, which was at the time one of only 11 universities and the only California Osteopathic medical school nationwide. There are currently 2 schools in California and 20 schools nationwide. By graduation, Dr. Sy ranked 5th out of a class of 94. She completed her internship and residency at the Arrowhead Regional Medical Center, one of the largest Family Medicine training facilities nationwide.

When she was hospitalized as a child, she recalls the vulnerability and fright she experienced and strives today to provide her patients with a sense of ease and comfort. Her compassion for others runs deep and views her practice of medicine as both an art and science – a tool in assisting others obtain and maintain optimal health. She is both glad and eager to join the Orange County community to cultivate her new medical practice.

In addition to her Orange County commitments, Dr. Sy has been practicing medicine for the last 15 years. She originally practiced in Moreno Valley, California for 12 years (with both hospital and nursing home staff privileges) and a number of her patients have followed her to her current Orange County location. She is a resident in Orange County and blessed with a family of her own. Her hobbies include hiking, golfing, and snow skiing.
